NBA thoughts.

Turns out Magic Johnson was probably right afterall last year when he said this...
"The Lakers have two problems," said Johnson, who sold his 4.5% ownership stake in the Lakers to billionaire season ticket-holder Patrick Soon-Shiong in October but has kept his title as vice president. "They're too slow and they have no athletes. This is an athletic league now. When you think about all the teams that are in the playoffs right now, they all can run fast and jump high.

We are seeing it again a year later. Last night was their best effort and it amounted to 75 pts. If they dont win game 3 friday night bring out the brooms saturday.

KG is looking better than he ever has in a celtic uniform on the offensive side of the ball. The offense is running more threw him in the post then ever before. He is going to have a nightly advantage for the rest of the year. The Celtics need 10 wins to get to #18!!!

Lebron missing those FT's was huge. He should be called out on it. But it has happened to some of the best. Magic comes right to memory. Why is Wade getting a pass from everyone? Should this team still deserved to be talked about? Their roster is pathetic. Mike Miller and Joel Anthony are bums. The three best teams in the NBA right now are clearly the spurs, okc and the 17x champs!!

Rookie of year, 3x champ, 3xMVP, coach of the year, exec of the year, the most successfull person in basketball history!!!

Round 2 predictions

Boston over PHL in 7. PHL won 2 of the 3 regular season games but they won the first 2. Before Boston got on a roll. KG aka The Kid who changed the game has had 57 pts and 25 boards in his last two games!!

Miami over Pacers in 6. No Bosh but Lebron isnt losing this series. Next round is a different story though.

Spurs over Clippers in 4. Spurs won the regular season series 2-1. Parker did not play in their loss. San Antonio is on a 14 game winning streak with average margin of victory being 18. San Antonio is the best team in basketball.

OKC over Lakers in 5. OKC was 2-1 vs Lakers in regular season. 2-0 with sixth man of the year James Hardin. Gasoft tried to go out quietly in the playoffs again but didnt get the job done. I love it when Gasoft gets all emotional after a rare physical play by him. Act like you done it before kid!

Round 2

First, LBJ wins 3rd MVP in 4 years. Exclusive company yet the only one without a ring. While he continues to dominate the regular season and is clearly the team and league's best player, his failures in the post season, especially against the Celtics are well known. He could very well be headed on a collision course with the Celtics again this year and his toughest challenge awaits in the NBA Finals. A failure this year, with all of the injuries, shortened season etc will only heighten LBJ's postseason failures and diminish his legacy further.

Round 2 has begun for 2 teams as the Tics held off the Sixers by 1. KG seems to have woken up after being called old and dirty and led the team with 29 pts and 11 boards last night. Even with Rondo's triple double, it STILL almost wasn't enough but Boston seems to play the marathon rather than the sprint. They aren't interested in sweeping anyone, just progressing towards the next round.

The Lakers won a record 11th straight home game 7 after being up 3-1 in the series. Personally, I predicted Lakers in 6 so World Peace would be back for game 1 of the 2nd round but Denver got pretty scary for the Lakers during this series. They have never been able to contain Ty Lawson and when he made some 3's the last 2 games, he got even scarier. The young guys Faried and Javalle Mcgee were playing inspired, hustling, rebounding and playing tough defense on Bynum and Gasol but the Lakers bigs were too much in game 7. Kobe stopped by the broadcast booth to tell Steve Kerr that since the Nuggets were double teaming so much, even HE (Kerr) could still play. Kobe made Steve Blake his very own version of Steve Kerr last night and World Peace's impact was felt on both sides of the ball, playing GREAT defense throughout the game. The Lakers have times when they look like the best team in the NBA and times where they could get swept by the worst team in the playoffs. Fans have gotten used to this inconsistent play but know they still have the talent to win another title. No word on Kendrick Perkins' injury status for game 1 on Monday but if the Lakers play defense and utilize the big men as they should, the Lakers could very well find themselves in the conference finals.

Another game 7 is being played today with the Clippers and Grizz. Should the Grizz win and move on to face the Spurs, they could very well have what it takes to beat them for the 2nd year in a row and make it to the West conf finals.

We have another 2nd round, game 1 today with the Heat and Pacers and there isn't much to say about this matchup other than the Heat will move on to the East finals.

If the Grizz win today, beat the Spurs and face the Lakers in the West finals and the Celtics and Heat meet in the East as expected, we could be seeing yet another epic Lakers/Celtics NBA Finals!!

Getting interesting...

After a couple sweeps knocked the Jazz and defending champs out, a couple teams avoided sweeps or eliminations. The Hawks survived a stupid turnover late in the game by Rondo himself making a stupid turnover, dribbling off his leg out of bounds. With Al Horford back and healthy, the Tic fans are shakin in their lil pointy leprechaun shoes.

The Lakers were stunned last night at home as the youthful Nuggets played inspired after Bynum's pregame statement that close out games are "easy." Bynum continues to be an enigma, perhaps one of the oddest individuals in the NBA. Mitch Kupchak said "7 footers are different." Javale Mcgee ran circles around Bynum who eventually picked up another technical for shoving Faried. A wise strategy would be to feed the beast early to make him happy so he plays hard on defense down the stretch. Not to be overlooked is the INCREDIBLE performance by Kobe Bean. He finished the game with 43 pts on 14-32 shooting. I tweeted during the 1st quarter that I expected 30 shots which is never a good thing for the Lakers. However, his late game heroics at the 3 pt line rivaled that of Reggie Miller's famous performance against the Knicks. He single handedly brought the Lakers within 2, had a short, contested shot to tie with under a min to play and missed. He took another 3 to tie and missed. After Denver folded, Kobe had a THIRD chance to tie with a 3 and missed.

The Knicks avoided a sweep somehow but were beaten badly tonight and sent fishing, The Bulls avoided elimination and could tie the series at 3 tomorrow night. The Pacers are set to face the Heat in the next round after they beat the D12-less Magic and the Grizz are at home tonight trying to make the series 3-2.

I have a feeling if the Tics can somehow get passed the Hawks (wheelchair Paul is looking pretty sore which is not a good sign) they might continue their mastery of Lebron and nothing would please me more than to see another Tics/Laker game 7 in LA!!

My MCA tribute and Beastie Boys thoughts.

My favorite quote involving MCA is "I got arrested down in Mardi Gras for jumping on a float. My man MCA's got a beard like a Billy Goat."

The Beastie Boys will go down in history as one of the top rap groups of all time. They are my #1. You can listen to license to Ill and Pauls Boutique pretty much all the way through. Both albums are filled with great songs. I challenge you to name another rap group that put out two records like that.

Sad week for sports/entertainment

I will have more this weekend although with the great Cinco De Mayo festivies it may be tough. For now, I wanted to acknowledge Junior Seau's untimely death and today, we lost one of the great pioneers of Hip-Hop, MCA.

Draft recap

The 2012 draft is in the books. I think it is funny reading most people's draft grades and they seem to give most teams A's or B's. How is that possible?

Teams that won the draft in my opinion.
The Rams-stockpiled picks from a team that is going to struggle next year
The Cowboys-traded up to get a lock down corner.
The Eagles and Bengals- both teams made solid picks all draft to sure up already proven teams.
The Browns- Weeden sounds the part of a solid starting QB. Trent is a Beast!

Teams that made solid picks.
The Stillers- drafted two starting lineman. Decastro looks like an all-pro. This is again solid drafting by the Stillers. Their defense still has major questions in the secondary and line. They are still destined to finish 3rd in the division behind the Ravens and Bengals.
The Pats- drafted all defense and made two solid first round selections.
The Cards- Mike Floyd is a Beast!

Teams that blew it.
The Dolphins- Mike Floyd is a Beast!
The Seahawks-Their pick didnt even start in college

The question marks.
The Niners. They totally reached in round one. Why? I know they targeted him but they could have gotten him later. They shoulda taken the other Jenkins!
The Redskins- They traded away alot for a QB that ran an option pass offense in college. I wouldnt have done it and I am not so sure RG3 is not a bust.

Injuries and Issues

The NBA season and post season has been plagued with injuries and issues throughout the season and now into the playoffs. It all started with the lockout then the infamous trade of CP3 to the Lakers only to be vetoed by the commissioner, Bynum suspended the first 4 games due to an incident last season and then the injuries mounted. Let's count em down: Dwight Howard - out for playoffs (back), Jeremy Lin-Sanity - out most of the season, might come back this week, TrailBlazers - everyone is hurt every year, Shumper torn ACL, D Rose torn ACL and now Amare attacked the glass and the glass attacked back.

From Melo controversy to the firing/resigning of D'Antoni to the Lakers deadline deals and losing D Fish who refused to report to Houston and signed with OKC. Metta World Peace is now suspended for 7 games and Rondo picked up a 1 game suspendion for humping a ref. Heck, there was even drama in the race for the scoring title and Kobe Bryant missed some games and could have played in the finale against the Kings in what is possibly THEIR finale in Sacramento but he opted to rest and play for ring #6 instead. Speaking of the Kings, they celebrated a new arena deal only to back out at the last minute. Maybe Stern will buy them out the way he did with the Hornets. We all know how well that turned out.

I hope the NBA learns something from this....the condensed season causing injuries to star players and the watered down league with too many teams is causing the overall play to diminish. The outcry from some was "don't let CP3 go to a major market, it hurts the small market teams" yet Stern stopped him from going to the Lakers only to have him traded to the Clippers in the very same major media market. Stern must've loved the "Lob City" hype and excitement it would bring to casual fans but REAL fans know there is so much more to basketball. Meanwhile, Stern's former media darling Michael Jordan is now part of the winningest team and losingest teams in NBA history. The Heat still have the 2 top players in the league and with the watered down league injuries to star players, it appears the road to Lebron's first title has finally been paved.

I think it is time for Stern to go. He made a mess of the lockout, mess of the Hornets, mess of the CP3 trade and has not taken the league to new heights since Jordan left. Too many expansion teams and piss poor decisions from the commissioner have brought the quality of the NBA to one of the lowest levels in recent years.

Me and Omar want Stern gone NOW!

Short AND Long NBA Season

The shortened NBA season or more appropriately called CONDENSED season has caused a lot of injuries throughout the season and now the postseason.

D Rose who had injuries all season finally got the last one yesterday that put him out the rest of the year. Unfortunately he will also miss part of next season and may likely never be the same again. As a victim of a torn ACL, I cringe every time I see it happen to someone else. This is why I have such a big problem with the bounty stuff and anyone who roots for knee injuries to people even just joking.

Hopefully, D Rose will talk to Kobe and Dirk and maybe read this article http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7796225/kobe-bryant-dr-chris-renna-regenokine-knee-treatment

With that injury, the entire NBA playoffs change shape. Shumpert for the Knicks has also torn an ACL and they were already short Jeremy Lin. The road to the finals seems clear for the Heat except for the fact that the Celtics OWN them and Lebron. As a Laker fan, I HATE the Celtics (Sucktics/Tics) but I must admit they have a good shot at making the finals this year now.

Durrant made the last shot and showed yesterday why they will beat the Heat in the finals if they make it. I still don't think they will get past the defending champ, Mavs and the Grizz will beat the Spurs again, paving the way for a Lakers/Celtics final!! No matter who makes it in the West, the Celtics are NO MATCH so we won't have to worry about #18 being raised for the Tics.

Craig Robinson and I agree!

Give World Peace a Chance

No justice for World Peace

It is always easy to go along with popular opinions, old cliché’s and what the media beats into our heads each day. Some people like to be contrarians JUST to get attention and it discredits the people who are truly independent thinkers.

Since the incident involving Metta World Peace last Sunday, the entire media and general population wants to vilify him and use words like “disgraceful” and question his mental state. I personally have read several articles, watched several experts including my hero Magic Johnson all advocating long and severe punishment.

First, does anyone think MWP REALLY wanted to get suspended especially at this time of the season with the playoffs looming? Oh, I get it. You think MWP is so crazy and “messed up in the head” that he wasn’t thinking at all. Well, he certainly wasn’t thinking about getting suspended or doing anything to jeopardize playing the in the postseason.

Next, some of these experts actually PLAYED the game so I am at a loss as to how they can’t understand EXACTLY what happened and why. Basketball often involves scrums under the basket with crowds of very large men. People who aren’t fans of the sport think it isn’t physical but they are clearly wrong. A lot of things happen in those scrums just like they do in football at the bottom of the pile. If someone emerges from that scrum and puts the ball in the hoop despite all of the arms, bumps etc going on, they usually get pretty excited and want to flex their muscles. If someone is in the way, they may not notice and accidentally hit someone while they are flexing. Heck, as a fan, I  got a bit too excited, swung my fist in celebration after Kobe made a big basket a few weeks ago and almost punched a friend in the face.

We should also consider James Harden’s involvement in the situation. Let me be clear, I am NOT blaming him at all but he DOES deserve to be brought into a discussion since this would not have happened if Harden didn’t PURPOSELY run into MWP as he was celebrating. Harden is a trash talker, a guy who does little things to irritate and get under the opposing player’s skin. Knowing how volatile and emotional MWP can be, he clearly tried to instigate something by running into MWP.

So here’s exactly what happened: World Peace comes through with a HUGE dunk in the face of Ibaka and Durrant and gets the crowd excited. In turn, he wants to flex his muscles, beat his chest and someone runs into him as he is running down court. He uses his elbow to clear some space, doesn’t care WHO it is and ultimately hits Harden square in the face. Had this been Kendrick Perkins, he gets hit in the shoulder and nothing is mentioned unless KP43 gets upset and reacts. If this was Pau Gasol, he gets hit in the chest and no one talks about it. It was 6’5” James Harden who stands 2 inches shorter than MWP and purposely ran into MWP while he was beating his chest.

People are trying to accuse me of being biased since I am a Laker fan but I defended Ron Artest in the brawl in Detroit also, long before he became a Laker. When I say “defend” him, I am not condoning his actions but I am saying they are understandable and he doesn’t deserve to be called all the names he is being called and treated like he is an insane criminal. If someone threw a beer on you, you wouldn’t be very happy about it and a fight would most likely be the result in most of the cases. The only difference here is Ron is a professional and is “supposed to be able to handle” this type of stuff.

Raja Bell purposely clothes lined Kobe a few years ago and got 1 game suspension. Metta World Peace, last year’s winner of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, has been suspended for what could be the first 2 games into the 2nd round for an ACCIDENTAL elbow. I think a 3 game suspension would have been fair. Last game against the Kings which could have had playoff implications until little brother lost last night to Atlanta and gave the Lakers the Pacific division crown and 2 games of the 1st round would have fit the crime. Not 7 games and all this name calling.

WORLD PEACE

I am tired of seeing people bash him like he tried to kill someone. Let's get a few things straight:

First, Metta World Peace is NOT Ron Artest as they are referring to him. This isn't the same guy who ran into the stands in Detroit. He even won J Walter Kennedy Citizenship award last year.

Next, Harden is no saint and he clearly did not want MWP to celebrate so he ran into his side/back area. MWP was celebrating until someone ran into him and he merely brushed him off with an elbow. He was clearly excited with adrenaline flowing so he cocked his arm back and used a bit too much force, the elbow HAPPENED to hit Harden in the head. Had this been a teammate, referee or anyone else, they too would have got hit with that elbow.

Lastly, when MWP ran down the court like nothing happened it was because he REALLY didn't know anything really happened. All he thought he did was clear some space. Ibaka came running down with his fists clinched and MWP was ready to fight but that doesn't mean anything except he was prepared to defend himself against someone who was attacking him.

It was CLEARLY not intentional yet people want to act like he purposely tried to take Harden out. If he WANTED to take him out, he would. But WHY would he?? He was in the best shape he has been in years and has been playing VERY WELL as of late. The Lakers are ready to make another long playoff run and MWP wants to be a part of that.

3 games is fair, 5 games is a bit high, anything else is ridiculous.

Statement Made

Jenks makes his blog debut with various statements.

The Spurs made a huge statement to the Lakers and the rest of the Association this past week. They are the hottest team in the league entering the NBA's second season.

My finals pick right now is Boston over San Antonio!

Its been a pretty exciting regular season despite what Charlie thinks. No team is perfect. D Rose has been injured for awhile now. Boston owns Miami. Miami would beat the Bulls in a series. The Spurs have just drilled the Lakers twice this week. OKC is on auto pilot right now.  My finals pick above doesnt seem too far fetched.

TSG stole my thunder this week. I was thinking Anthony Davis should replace Dwight Howard on the Olympic team and Bill Simmons posted the same thought in his mailbag yesterday. Team USA needs another Center besides Chandler and Anthony Davis should be the pick.

The two people I am following closely in the NFL draft are Richardson and Floyd. Richardson would be my highest rated RB coming out of college since AP. Floyd is the best goalline receiver I saw in college since Fitz. Cleveland would be nuts to pass up Trent and I would draft Floyd before the Blackmon.

In closing, Check out Jenks' new T-Shirt!!!!

Los Angeles is NOT Flop City

Dodgers fans booed Chris Paul and his son

Chris Paul speaks to Jay Leno, incurs the wrath of the comedy gods (Kevin Winter/ Getty).
When Chris Paul joined the Los Angeles Clippers this December, some observers suggested that he could help turn the Clippers into the city's marquee basketball team. That idea was always misguided — the Lakers have been good for so long that their fans have developed a serious attachment. However, it's hard to imagine that CP3 didn't accept his trade without some hope that he could win over a critical mass of fans in L.A. County. His degree of success is up for debate.
On Sunday, Paul attended a Dodgers game, as residents of the city are wont to do. He got quite a surprise, though, when he and his young son were shown on Dodger Stadium's video screen. Because a lot of people — presumably also Lakers fans — booed him. From the Associated Press (via TBJ):
Paul took his 2-year-old son to a Dodgers game on Sunday. They were both wearing Dodgers caps and his son waved at the crowd. ''They booed me bad,'' he said. ''I was just happy that my son didn't know what was going on.''
NBA stars have been criticized for improper allegiances before — think of LeBron James, Akron native and then a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, wearing a Yankees hat — but as far as I know no players have been booed by their hometown fans for wearing the right cap and smiling to the camera. On top of that, Paul's really adorable son Chris (aka CP4) theoretically should have deflected some of the boos.
Nevertheless, Dodgers fans booed him, and it's hard to see it being for any reason other than that he plays for the Clippers. With the playoffs set to start soon, the Lakers and Clips are rivals, and it's clear which franchise is the lesser in the eyes of the population. When faced with a choice, fans are going to opt for Kobe and the rest of the purple and gold. There's really no other option.
Hopefully CP3 and his family can find safe haven at other L.A. sporting events. But to get cheered, wearing the right apparel isn't enough. He might need to put on a Lakers jersey, too.

DOUBLE TAKE

Ryan Clark embarassed himself yesterday although Steeler fans seemed to support his comments about Skip and Stephen A. Today, Stephen A finished the discussion and took the high road.

You see, having degrees doesn't mean you have 20+ years of experience in the REAL world. Also, making comments without knowing the FACTS can REALLY make you look foolish. I've followed and have been one of Stephen A's biggest fans for years although not always agreeing with him. To insult a man who has supported the black athlete as much as Stephen A has is to insult yourself even more.

First Take is a BIG inspiration for this very blog. It all started by me and a group of passionate sports fans discussing everything in sports and evolved into music and other areas of entertainment. Watching Skip and Stephen A on First Take inspired me to put this blog out for the public since we expanded the discussions to music and entertainment.

Here's a tweet from Stephen A. after I once challenged him to a debate:

Anniversary of one of the greatest days in sports

Jackie Robinson not only broke the color barrier in baseball, he helped pave the way for every sport across the world.

My good friend Eddie Mata wrote this blog today for the MLB Fan Cave:

42: Eddie Mata Sunday April 15, 2012 5:48 AM

Allowing every player in the league to wear number 42 is such an honor for everybody involved in baseball. Whether you're a player or fan, it reminds us all how difficult and heroic it was for the first African American Major League Baseball player to break the color barrier. Jackie Robinson opened the doors for other African American baseball players to play this wonderful game. Imagine Major League Baseball without Ken Griffey Jr., CC Sabathia, Brandon Phillips and Tony Gwynn. Just a drop of the many great African American players who have graced our fine sport with their superior play. We can thank Jackie for opening those doors and allowing all of these great players to have an opportunity to play in Major League Baseball. Current and future African American players need to always remember (not just on this special day) that if it wasn't for Jackie, their baseball careers and lives would have been much different. We all need to remember that, when Jackie broke the color barrier in 1947, he received death threats consistently. Most teams, players and fans didn't want him in the league. He battled everyday to survive not just on the baseball field, but in life in general. Since April 15, 1997, MLB has celebrated Jackie's defining baseball and moment and has retired his number in every Major League Baseball stadium. We as fans need to take the time to appreciate this great moment in baseball history and ensure that it continues to live on forever.
Thank you, Jackie Robinson. Thank you for helping to define our sport, culture and society as a whole. While our world isn't perfect, it is certainly a much better place today because of your contributions.

Prisoner of the moment

Don't be one!! Last week, the Celtics lost to the Spurs IN Boston and the Bulls without D Rose. They beat the Heat twice and suddenly people act like they are for real. The Heat are 12-9 since the all-star break, beating them isn't as big as people think.

Meanwhile......The Lakers are up 20 on the Spurs IN San Antionio WITHOUT Kobe Bean.

Don't be a prisoner of the moment!!

Hockey time!!

Tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins battle the heated rival Flyers. Are the Penguins the Heat of the NHL with the 2 best players in the league on the SAME TEAM?? They certainly light up the scoreboard for a hockey team!

Kobe out 3rd straight

Yesterday, I posted an article from the LA Times discussing how the Lakers have more successful lobs than their little brother, the "Lob City" Clippers. It was then argued that the intent of the phrase did NOT include lay-ups. Intent or not, a lob should NOT be confused with an Alley-Oop.

It never ceases to amaze me how fans can hate a team so much that they refuse to accept the facts and the same applies to fans who love their team.

Interesting....both coaches are have quit the controversial past, both "winners" in terms of coaching records and 1 team FIRES one and the other slaps one on the wrist. The guy who cheated on his wife and got caught is fired, the guy who made ethnic insensitive remarks is stil coaching.

Bizarre.
